The Band Toto Asia

Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure that the next generation could read them. Many words were replaced by foreign ones. For example dui, which is Bengali for verandah was being used.

Origins

Toto's early history, which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the early years of its existence, the company produced goods to meet demand for modern and contemporary urban housing. It had the first tunnel kiln in the nation to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation for production control, which helps to increase efficiency and a more consistent production.

The company began expanding its operations overseas in the late 1980s to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other products from other manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm’s global market share.

In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for household appliances that are water-related. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and boost profits. The company also employed the just-in-time approach to its supply chain management as well as sales program. This led to a higher degree of customer satisfaction.

Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. Its latest toilet, for example is equipped with a powerful tornado flush that is more environmentally green than traditional toilets. The company also uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green procurement policy. In addition to toilets, Toto manufactures faucets and bathtubs, as well as hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than conventional models.

The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It features exhibits on Toto’s seminal products, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made of ceramics), the history of plumbing and other products like bath units. In another gallery, visitors can see Toto products sold all over. The museum has the bathroom equipped with a WASHLET and other toilet innovations.

Before forming Toto the band, members of the group did sessions for various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also played on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

It is common for a group with a name like Asia to be a prog rock group however, it's actually a fairly straight forward rock outfit. The band started out as a group and recorded two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The band has a varied musical background, but their biggest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but it was not without its issues. Record companies put the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that is a success or we'll take you off the market" and the pressure was on to meet the deadline. Luckily for Toto, they did with the aid of the smash single "Africa."

This album starts off hard with tracks like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly get their hooks into your. The album also has some slower, more jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and the distorted AOR which could seem like a complete blunder, but works extremely well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band went through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The band managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more precise, sharper and less cloned previously recorded recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album just a few months after and embarked on a world tour support the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was released as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the band's first album without one single track titled "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and singer Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis infection which hampered his singing. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of restructuring the band. This lineup, minus Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also featured a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
